This kit retains full use of your stock foot brake and stock rear master cylinder while adding a powerful 1.5" diameter handbrake caliper. Handbrakes are very simple, they work using ratios. The ratio between the size of the piston in the master cylinder and the size of the piston in the caliper determine the multiplication of the force applied to the handbrake lever (which in turn is transmitted to the faces of the brake pads). Use too small of a rear caliper in relation to the handbrake master and you are not applying enough force to the pads to be affective. Your lever will just feel very stiff and will require lots of effort to get any result.
This kit on the other hand is very responsive to fine lever inputs and is more of a "1 finger" handbrake. It's more easily controlled and requires much less effort than any other handbrake available for the CRF 250's and 450's. It is also impotant to note the the height of the pads used on this 2nd caliper are the same height as the pads used on the stock caliper. They are radially positioned to contact the same surface on the rotor so that you don't have any funny wear patterns or have to grind down pads to work as you do with other kits on the market.
Everything included (the bracket, the steel braided brake line) is new except the caliper. The calipers are purchased used, inspected and rebuilt with a new seal kit if necessary. They are cleaned up with brand new pads installed. When you factor the cost of a caliper, a rebuild kit, new pads, the braided line and the precision CNC machined dual caliper bracket you'll see this kit is a bargain. If you decide to upgrade the kit with one of our handlebar mounted master cylinders listed below you will be saving substantially on the cost of purchasing one seperately.
The handlebar mounted master cylinders listed below will complete your kit, so that upon arrival of you parts you'll only need DOT 4 brake fluid on hand to finish the job. Both of the masters listed are very good units that will allow for simultaneous operation (using index finger clutch/middle finger hand brake). The Nissin 1/2 bore is completely up to the job and is a great master cylinder. The Magura unit is incrementally better. You won't be disappointed either way.
